Description
Select a city in Minnesota (here, a city is a place with administratively defined boundaries and having a mayor—the chief executive officer of the city). Make sure you selected a city that you can answer all the directions described below (you may not want to say, for example, this city has no marginalized population because all residents are White middle class). Once you select one, follow the following directions.
1.Introduction: Give a brief introduction of this paper in 2-3 paragraphs (i.e., an overall picture of this paper)
- Background: Investigate it by using publicly available sources (e.g., a city website or U.S. Census data). Then, give some relevant background information about the city (e.g., poverty rates, racial/ethnic composition, education level, crime rates, mean income, etc., which are important factors in social work).
- Theory Definition and Application:
- Marginalized Population in the Community
- When you try to find a marginalized population in the city, think the definition of marginalized population. Marginalized populations are groups that experience discrimination and exclusion (social, political and economic) because of unequal power relationships across economic, political, social and cultural dimensions. They are discriminated and excluded because of gender, age, race/ethnicity, nativity, class, sexual orientation, gender identity, education, disability, etc.
- Identify one marginalized population living in this city. Then, follow the directions below.
- Name the population and describe how they are marginalized.
- When describing, give specific examples (make sure you find the information from reliable/official government sources or news articles, etc. and cited the sources)
- Describe how the social environment (e.g., community people’s attitudes, available/accessible social services, laws, policies, opportunities in accessing education and job, etc.) is responsive to the needs of this population.
- When describing, give specific examples (make sure you find the information from reliable/official government sources or news articles, etc. and cited the sources)
- Describe any evidence that the city is dealing constructively with the issues the marginalized population is facing
- When describing, give specific examples (make sure you find the information from reliable/official government sources or news articles, etc. and cited the sources)
- Name the population and describe how they are marginalized.
- Social Service Programs from another country (nation) for the Marginalized Population You Identified Above.
- Find one program in another nation that is designed to help the marginalized group you identified above (make sure it is not just an organization/policy/law, but a program that a social service organization implemented for the marginalized group)
- Introduce the program (Make sure you cite the sources of information).
- Include how the program supports the marginalized population in the nation.
- Also include (1) recent activities and (2) recent achievements they made for the marginalized group.
- Discuss why this organization would benefit the marginalized population in the city you selected.
- In your discussion, incorporate the 6 core values in NASW code of ethics.
- Make sure you cited the sources of the information by following APA format.
- When assessing the city using the theories above, follow the directions below:
- Use the following 4 theories:
- (1) ‘Social systems approach: Social Ecological Theory’
- (2) ‘Conflict approach’
- (3) ‘Social capital approaches
- Bonding social capital
- Bridging social capital
- Linking social capital
