When caring for female patients of African-American (AA) heritage, the CNS and NP should be aware that:
a) AA women may have varying experiences of bias, discrimination, and access to quality health care that necessitate individualized appraisal for trust-building.
b) APRNs provide better quality, more individualized culturally congruent care for AA women therefore all admission histories and physicals should be assigned to APRNs.
c) negotiating and/or repatterning health behaviors, values, and practices is in conflict with self-determination theory, the US Constitution, and culture care theory.
d) pain assessment must be conducted in the same way as for white women to assure equality and prevent opioid dependency or overdose.
