The purpose of graphical visualization is to help individuals identify a multitude of data in an easy-to-understand graph or illustration. These illustrations could help one identify key performance indicators (KPIs), market values, and maps (Power BI Team, 2022). At my work, we use graphical representations to identify the department’s progress to establish KPIs, ultimately placing if we make our bonuses at the end of the year.
Excel is just one tool for business. Almost every large technology company has adopted cloud AI technology to help identify trends and beneficial new strategies. Companies such as Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, IBM Watson, Google Analytics, SQL server analysis, and SAP are helping businesses decide on the data to improve their business making.
Walgreens uses Microsoft Azure to help cost-effectively scale its business to make the right decisions for the fast-paced market. The 118-year-old company has received help to process and think smarter. It uses Microsoft Azure Synapse Analytics on the cloud. The real-time data analysis allows the company to forecast orders to ensure shortages do not occur and establish capital investments and product pricing. Since switching, it has lowered the cost of ownership, decision-making, and modernized business processes (Microsoft, 2022).

How many times has there been a meeting, and the financials look like meaningless numbers? Or a briefing on a project that is just a list of tasks with dates next to it?
Data visualization is represented through standard graphics, such as charts, plots, infographics, and animations (IBM Cloud Education, 2021). Unless it is a field that an individual work with consistently, they may not understand the patterns in a group of numbers or dates. A financial or business analyst may be perfectly comfortable looking at a bunch of numbers on the page and be able to recognize trends or patterns to see what is going on. The audience of the data may require a visual representation to understand where the trends are. A program planner can look at a list of tasks with predecessors and successors and see a pattern, but when they present the information, a Gantt chart is necessary to convey the message. One that is data literate can process, interpret, and summarize the data so it can be easily communicated (Taylor, 2019).
The curios professor has an article breaking down four types of data visuals, Idea Illustration, Idea Generation, Everyday Data Viz, and Visual Discovery, the first two fall on the spectrum between conceptual to data-driven. At the same time, the last two are declarative or exploratory (Borgault, 2019).
- Idea Illustration uses common visual metaphors to illustrate complex ideas and relationships (Borgault, 2019). An example of this type of visualization is a process map or organization chart.
- Idea Generation uses images to explore different trends and patterns for this type of illustration (Borgault, 2019). An example of this type of visualization could be tracking of weather.
- Everyday Data Viz is the typical line and bar graphs showing a story on a specific data set (Borgault, 2019). These would be the financial data spoken about earlier.
- Visual Discovery are visuals generated using data but seeking to explore a concept by answering a hypothesis. An example of this one is a data-driven exploratory graph (Borgault, 2019).
Whatever type of visualization a business analyst uses, they understand their audience and what would be appropriate to communicate the message they are trying to convey. Even among detail-oriented people, presenting information during a meeting is more efficient and effective if visualizations go along with the raw data so it can be interpreted quickly, and decisions can be made.
